In that time, whatever each one had for her use, she would have to so completely wear it out before she could get something new, and it was also patched up so many times that sometimes one could barely tell — either of hats or of undies — whether the cloth from which they were originally made, was large or small. And no one was allowed to have more than one hat. And were it the case that anyone lost her hat, she would have to go a whole year without a hat, because she had looked after it so poorly. And if anyone lost her stylus, she would have to write for an entire year with a stick, before someone gave her another stylus.
And similarly was it skimpy also in eating, and drinking and in all that one needed at a meal.
