(32) Van zuster Gertrut ten Colke († 1432)

“Then it happened at one time that her mother [the spiritual mother and leader of the community] came to her and saw that she had on this old, gray little hood on her head. She looked at her then and said, “Gertrut, do you have no other better hood to wear? I gave you just recently a new one; where is it?” [It had been given to another sister].

Then she answered her mother back in a friendly way, and said, “Now, dear mother, what do you mean, do I have no better hat than this? I have another, a black hat, by our beds.”

And thus she satisfied her mother, so that she did not know anything else, except that she still had a better hat by her bed — But that black hat was much poorer than the gray one, which she had on her head!
